Mary J. Blige told the fan they did not have to come, then carried on with a surprise appearance from Wyclef Jean.
Mary J. Blige stopped her show at Dolby Live at Park MGM in Las Vegas on Wednesday night, October 28, to deal with a fan who was booing her. Footage obtained by TMZ captured the exchange, and E! Online and Billboard both carried it.
She told the fan they did not have to come. "I hope someone sees you and politely removes you," she said. She also called them an idiot and asked what they had spent their money on. The Miami Herald reported that Blige asked for the audience member to be escorted out of the venue.
She then apologized to her fans. "I'm sorry, sometimes I just gotta go in. Because that's where I'm from," she said, according to the Daily Mail.
Blige kept going. Less than 30 minutes after she paused the show, she brought out Wyclef Jean to perform 911, E! Online reported, citing TMZ. Billboard describes the song as a top 40 Billboard Hot 100 hit. The Miami Herald said the guest appearance surprised the crowd.
Speaking to Good Morning America in May, she said of her fans:
"But what they love most-the true fans-is that I'm not bitter, I'm better."
The residency, Mary J. Blige: My Life, My Story, began in May. In September, Blige announced it would end in February 2027 after 20 shows in all. "This residency felt like divine timing," she said in a statement at the time.
The set draws on her career. The Miami Herald lists songs including My Life, Real Love, Mary Jane (All Night Long), Be Without You, I'm Going Down, Family Affair and Just Fine.
Blige returns to the stage on Friday, October 30, with a second weekend show on tap for Halloween at Dolby Live, which Billboard says is her last residency date of 2026. The five dates in February 2027 close the run.
