United lost 2-0 at Chelsea, sit 17th, and Carrick's future is expected to be reviewed again during the international break.

Michael Carrick expects to be in charge of Manchester United for Tuesday's Champions League game against Roma at Old Trafford, despite a 2-0 defeat at Chelsea on Saturday 31 October. Asked by TNT Sports whether he expected to be in charge for that game, he answered "Yeah."

The defeat means United have not won any of their last nine matches in all competitions. They are 17th in the Premier League with seven points, above the relegation zone only on goal difference.

United were the better side for much of the first half and wasted chances. Carrick said his side had been "as good as we'd played for some time" in that period. Chelsea forward Morgan Rogers put the home side ahead at the start of the second half. Defender Lisandro Martinez was booked twice in two minutes and sent off, the second booking coming for a challenge on Wesley Fofana that conceded the penalty Cole Palmer scored.

Carrick did not blame Martinez. Asked whether the defender had let him down, he said no.

Carrick said: "We've got to move forward and win matches, it's as simple as that." Pressed on his future after the game, he added: "I'm just looking forward to getting the boys ready for midweek now."

United's away support kept singing Carrick's name during the match, and he applauded them at full-time. He spoke about the fans who stayed behind at Stamford Bridge:

"We've got to give them something to really get their teeth into in a good direction."

There remains a view within United's hierarchy that Carrick can still transform the club's fortunes. Chief executive Omar Berrada and Jason Wilcox, the director of football, met at Carrington on Monday to discuss his future, and decided he should be given a chance to turn form and results around. Carrick, 45, was nearly dismissed from the post.

Wilcox's first choice to replace Carrick, should he be dismissed, is Eddie Howe, the former Newcastle manager, and contact between the parties is understood to have been made. Howe is open to taking the job, subject to negotiations, and would cost about £3m in compensation to Newcastle.

Julian Nagelsmann, the former Germany and Bayern Munich head coach, is highly regarded by Christopher Vivell, United's director of recruitment, who is believed to have sounded out the German. The pair previously worked together at RB Leipzig.

Carrick's position is expected to be reviewed again during the international break, after the home game with Aston Villa at Old Trafford on Sunday 8 November.
