Nigerian gospel singer and pastor Nathaniel Bassey has passed one billion views on YouTube.
His official channel, Nathaniel Bassey Main, had about 1.014 billion views and 5.24 million subscribers as of Sunday, November 1, 2026, according to PM News, which cited the YouTube analytics trackers Social Blade and ReachRanking. The channel was created on March 4, 2011, so the milestone comes more than 15 years later.
Vanguard, Legit.ng and PM News report that Bassey is the first African gospel artist to reach one billion views. Punch went further, calling him the first gospel artist to reach the milestone, "according to available channel statistics."
The Hallelujah Challenge effect
The milestone arrived during the October 2026 edition of the Hallelujah Challenge, the online prayer and worship programme Bassey founded in 2017. PM News reported that the October edition contributed to the latest surge in viewership: its grand finale, the Hallelujah Festival, recorded more than 4.3 million views, and the opening session attracted over four million, according to ReachRanking data.
The Hallelujah Challenge began in June 2017 as a midnight praise and prayer session on Instagram Live. It has since grown into a global online Christian gathering, with participants joining from different countries through social media.
Why he will not monetise it
The billion-view figure has led some followers to suggest that Bassey could make money from the audience his worship sessions attract. He has maintained that the Hallelujah Challenge is about worship and spiritual devotion rather than revenue.
In November 2025 he explained his decision during one of the sessions, according to a report by The Guardian cited by PM News: "People are dragging me because I didn't monetise my YouTube channel for the Hallelujah Challenge. I won't monetise it; God didn't tell me to."
Bassey is known for gospel songs including Imela, Onise Iyanu, Olowogbogboro and You Are God. Besides being a gospel minister, he is a trumpeter, songwriter and music producer, and a pastor at The Oasis, the youth church of the Redeemed Christian Church of God's The King's Court in Lagos.
