The Belgian goalkeeper would stay at the Bernabéu for one more season, through 2027-28, under a deal reported as preliminary.

Real Madrid have taken a step towards keeping Belgian goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois beyond June 2027, when his current contract at the Santiago Bernabéu runs out. Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano reports that the club have reached a preliminary agreement with Courtois for one more season, guarding the goal through the 2027-2028 campaign.

Romano's post on X, as quoted by Daily Sports, put it more firmly: "Real Madrid have reached an agreement with Thibaut Courtois to extend his contract until 2028." Goal's report calls the deal preliminary and says both parties are close to finishing the new contract. Real Madrid have yet to confirm it officially.

According to Goal, Madrid regard Courtois as one of the best goalkeepers in the world and a vital piece of the project. Rather than look for a replacement, Madrid want to hold on to one of their most important assets. Last September, Spanish press reports pointed to both sides nearing an extension through 30 June 2028.

Courtois, 34, has been one of the team's standout stars since arriving from Chelsea in August 2018. Goal's report points to the 2022 Champions League final against Liverpool, where his saves helped Real Madrid win their fourteenth European title and earned him the man of the match award. Notjustok, citing the club's May 2026 profile, lists two UEFA Champions League titles, three LaLiga titles and one Copa del Rey among his honours at the club. Notjustok adds that he collected the Yashin Trophy in 2022, an award acknowledging him as the globe's top goalkeeper.

A serious knee injury in 2023 kept him out for a long spell. He came back, reclaimed his place and, according to Goal, remains the undisputed first choice.

Daily Sports puts his numbers this season at 16 saves and a clean sheet in five appearances, and says his seven saves in the 2-1 Champions League win over Inter Milan were decisive. The outlet adds that he has more than 338 appearances and has repeatedly said he wants to retire at the Bernabéu.

Real Madrid have other goalkeeping options, including Andriy Lunin, according to Notjustok. Daily Sports says the club are also looking to the academy, naming teenager Javi Navarro, one of Spain's most promising keepers after his Youth League displays, and Fran González at Sevilla as players being tracked closely.

According to Daily Sports, the Belgian is presently on a voluntary pause from national-team duty and intends to be back around this period next year, ahead of the Euro 2028 qualifiers.
