Franculino Dju, Mama Balde and Alvaro Djalo scored as Nigeria slipped to second in Group L of the 2027 AFCON qualifiers.

Nigeria's Super Eagles lost 3-0 to Guinea-Bissau on Tuesday night, a first defeat for coach Eric Chelle and a heavy jolt to their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.

Franculino Dju put the hosts ahead at the Estadio 24 de Setembro with 15 minutes gone, curling a shot past Stanley Nwabali. Nigeria pushed for an equaliser before the break, Alex Iwobi setting up Ademola Lookman, but goalkeeper Djoco Embadje was equal to it.

Mama Balde doubled the lead shortly after the hour, and Alvaro Djalo added a third deep in stoppage time to complete a scoreline few travelling supporters saw coming.

The Super Eagles had travelled to Bissau level on three points with their hosts after a 2-1 comeback win over Madagascar. Guinea-Bissau now lead Group L on six points, having also beaten Tanzania 2-0, while Nigeria sit second on three.

Chelle offered no excuses in his post-match press conference, beyond a word on the surface. "I apologise to the fans. Guinea-Bissau were the better side. The pitch is also bad, but we accept responsibility," he said.

Nigeria's next competitive games come in November, a double-header against Tanzania. Before that, they face Russia in a friendly on October 6.
