Real Madrid confirmed the France captain hyperextended the posterior capsule of his left knee while scoring the winner in Zinedine Zidane's first game in charge.

Kylian Mbappé has been ruled out for at least two weeks after hyperextending his left knee while scoring the winner in Zinedine Zidane's first match as France head coach.

The Real Madrid forward fired France ahead in their Nations League opener against Turkey on Friday, then went down holding his left knee moments after a record-extending 67th international goal. Michael Olise set up the low shot in the 55th minute. Mbappé was treated on the pitch and tried to carry on, but soon sat back on the turf and was replaced by Désiré Doué.

"It's not great. Unfortunately, I think he is going to have to go home. We don't want to take any risks," Zidane told French broadcaster TF1 after the 1-0 win in Izmit. "He overextended his knee while shooting. It's not very encouraging."

Mbappé returned to Madrid rather than travelling to Brussels with the squad, and Real Madrid confirmed the damage the following day. "After the tests carried out today on our player Kylian Mbappe by Real Madrid's medical services, he has been diagnosed with a hyperextension of the posterior capsule of his left knee," the club said in a statement. "His recovery will be monitored."

The 27-year-old, who agreed to join Real Madrid after a drawn-out exit from Paris Saint-Germain, now misses France's Nations League games against Belgium on Monday and Italy on 2 October. His next chance to play for his club is the LaLiga visit of Villarreal on 10 October.

It is the first setback of Zidane's tenure: three points, but no captain. Mbappé had just stretched his lead as France's all-time leading scorer, and Real Madrid will assess his knee ahead of the Villarreal game on 10 October.
