The limited series will follow Lady Violet's early life and her romance with Viscount Edmund Bridgerton, with Shonda Rhimes writing.

Netflix has ordered a new limited series set in the Bridgerton universe, and this time the spotlight falls on a younger Lady Violet. Netflix and Shondaland announced the order on Thursday, 8 October.

The series has no name yet. Netflix said the rollout will be similar to Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story, the 2023 spinoff, and the title is still to be decided.

The show will chronicle the early life of Lady Violet and her romance with Viscount Edmund Bridgerton. Ruth Gemmell plays the character in Bridgerton, while Connie Jenkins-Greig played a younger version of Violet in Queen Charlotte. It is unclear whether Jenkins-Greig will return, and no cast has been announced.

Shonda Rhimes and Nicholas Nardini will write and run the show. Nardini was a producer on Queen Charlotte and a writer on Rhimes's ABC series Scandal. Rhimes wrote all but one episode of Queen Charlotte, and this is the first time the Grey's Anatomy creator has written a show since creating that series.

Tom Verica, who directed and executive produced Queen Charlotte, is back in the same role. Shondaland's Betsy Beers is also an executive producer.

The new show draws on Violet In Bloom, a short novella by Julia Quinn that tells the love story of Violet and Edmund. Queen Charlotte, by contrast, was an original creation built on characters from Quinn's novels.

Queen Charlotte ran for six episodes in 2023 and debuted at No. 1 in 91 countries. Since its 2020 debut, Bridgerton has remained a lasting success for Netflix. Based on 13 weeks of viewership worldwide, the show's first and third seasons both sit in Netflix's all-time top 10 for English-language series. The fourth season, which launched in January, appeared on the streamer's weekly top 10 charts for nine weeks.

Season five, focused on Francesca Bridgerton (Hannah Dodd) and Michaela Stirling (Masali Baduza), is in production in London. Netflix has renewed Bridgerton through a sixth season.
