Drake wanted Jim Carrey to roast him. He got the Roastmaster General instead.
Jeff Ross, the comic known as the Roastmaster General, surprised Drake with a birthday roast in Houston, the latest stop in the rapper's 40th celebrations. Ross shared a selfie of the two on his Instagram Story, captioned "Drake enjoying his surprise birthday roast in Houston tonight," and set it to National Treasures from ICEMAN.
Drake reposted the photo to his own Instagram Story and called Ross "The F-king General." No clips of the roast had surfaced on social media yet.
Drake had wanted a roast from Jim Carrey. In September, Carrey roasted Ross on his 61st birthday, joking that Ross was such an "ugly baby" that "God made his mother sign an NDA." Ross posted the clip and wrote, "It made me so happy I had to share it with roast fans everywhere!" Drake saw it and said on Instagram at the time that a Carrey roast was now all he wanted for his birthday. He did not get Carrey, but Ross made sure he was properly roasted to start his 40s.
Drake spent the weekend celebrating his birthday in New York City. About 400 guests attended his party at Casa Cipriani in Manhattan, where the Backstreet Boys surprised him, and Drake joined them on stage for I Want It That Way, their 1999 smash.
At that party, Drake told the room the night was not about a tour, an album release or a bunch of videos.
"It's about being alive, staying alive."
Designer gifts and cash prizes were raffled off, and many guests didn't leave empty-handed.
Drake released three albums in May. ICEMAN, HABIBTI and MAID OF HONOUR took the No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 spots on the Billboard 200 at the same time, making him the first artist to occupy the top three slots at once.
