Dimitrios Kourbelis's deflected strike earns Greece a first-ever win over Germany, leaving Klopp winless after two games in charge.

Jürgen Klopp's first home match as Germany head coach ended in a 1-0 defeat, as Dimitrios Kourbelis struck a deflected 74th-minute winner to give Greece a famous Nations League victory in Augsburg.

Kourbelis's low shot from the edge of the box took a deflection off Joshua Kimmich and left the Germany goalkeeper with no chance. The hosts had looked in control for long spells, keeping close to 80% possession in the first half alone, but they were punished for sloppy defending as Greece sat deep and broke forward with intent.

It was Greece's first win over Germany in 11 meetings, after seven defeats and three draws, and it lifts Ivan Jovanovic's side to the top of Group A2 with six points from two games. Germany, who drew 1-1 with the Netherlands in Klopp's first game in charge on Thursday, sit third with a single point.

Klopp was named Germany head coach in July on a four-year deal, replacing Julian Nagelsmann after the team's shock World Cup exit to Paraguay. The 59-year-old, who left Liverpool at the end of the 2023-24 season, is still waiting for a first win.

The result carries an echo of another famous German upset, the kind of result Klopp was hired to leave behind.

"I could have lived with us not winning but you cannot lose such a game," Klopp said after the final whistle. "The result is not cool but it is absolutely part of the process."

Greece host the Netherlands on Thursday, while Germany are at home to Serbia still searching for a first win under Klopp.
