Moyes declines to give details as Everton beat Newcastle 3-1 to reach the Carabao Cup quarter-finals.
Everton left Jack Grealish out of their Carabao Cup win over Newcastle United on Thursday. The club said on X that he was "unavailable for selection due to a breach of club discipline". The England winger, on loan from Manchester City, was not in the side for the 3-1 win at Hill Dickinson Stadium, which sets up a quarter-final at League Two Fleetwood Town.
Everton have not confirmed what the breach involves. Reports say it is an unauthorised absence from training, and it is understood he missed a session on Monday without permission. He has since returned to training at the Finch Farm complex, but is expected to be fined.
Asked about it afterwards, Everton manager David Moyes declined to go into detail. "It was a club decision," he said. "I support the decision. It's something I don't really want to speak too much about."
Grealish also missed Everton's 2-0 defeat at Arsenal on Saturday, which Everton put down to illness. He has yet to register a goal or an assist this season.
Last season, on loan from City as well, he had two goals and six assists in 20 appearances before a season-ending foot injury in January. The Guardian reports that Everton paid £12m in total for that loan and are paying a similar sum this time. He is in the final year of a reported £300,000-a-week contract at City, according to the BBC, and the Guardian reports he will become a free agent when it expires at the end of this season.
Back in August, Everton chief executive Angus Kinnear told BBC Radio Merseyside: "He is a player who has fallen in love with the right shade of blue, but ultimately he is a City player and we have to respect that."
James Garner, Hayden Hackney and Thierno Barry scored for Everton. Dan Burn grabbed a late consolation, and tempers flared as players clashed after Burn's goal. Moyes praised the players for not letting Grealish's absence distract them, and pointed to the club's values:
"All the players stand up to the values on pitch and off the pitch."
Jarrad Branthwaite was also out of action for a second straight match, as he is still working through concussion protocols. Everton will travel to Fleetwood Town in December. Moyes would not say whether Grealish will be available for the Premier League meeting with Newcastle at St James' Park on Monday.
