The promised new song by Burna featuring Dave expected to land Friday has an early arrival courtesy of pre-add/pre-save on DSPs. The song carries the Cheat On Me title and touches on the hassle faced by Nigerians at the embassy in need of a visa.
Burna Boy takes on the mantle of a “leader” speaking on the oppression and prejudice faced by his “people” requiring ease of travel. “Me, I just want see my people dem— / Getting bigger / I swear down make embassy no deny my people visa, oh,” Burna sings soulfully. As opposed to the “japa” mission, Burna defends the integrity of his people, saying such an act will not happen. “And they do not intend to permanently leave town / Standing my feet down,” he confidently stamps.
Dave, although born and raised in the United Kingdom, is no stranger to the prejudice faced by a Black man in the diaspora. So much, he speaks of the countless times he has had his visa denied. “For the fact I had to fight for my visa / I’m swiping my Visa,” he starts, sneakingly making known his visa being denied was never because of lack of funds. But now that Dave has amassed a huge following and reputable status, “Make you no deny me my Visa,” he asks of those in charge.
Burna Boy returns with a reassuring speech via the bridge. “If I ever said I loved you / Then I’ll always be by your side,” he notes. Burna convinces his people he will ride or die for them. This is similar to his verse on Big 7. “Don’t like squares in my crew, if I call you my brother, then you best believe you’re stuck with me,” the verse boats.
Burna interpolates his hit Kilometre single in Cheat On Me. “Taking my niggas around the world / Every day, kilome—, kilome—, kilometre, oh.” He sings happily.
The chorus of Cheat On Me samples Kwabs’ Cheating On Me (2015). Kwabs vocals were cut, chopped, pitched, and looped as he sang “Ah, and I couldn’t see, I was cheating on, cheating on me.”
I Told Them… (album) will house Cheat On Me. By Friday, June 25, it will be available worldwide.
