Jamie Carragher says Liverpool have missed Trent Alexander-Arnold's creativity, and the right-back is now third choice at Real Madrid.

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher wants the club to bring Trent Alexander-Arnold back to Anfield. Speaking on The Overlap, he said: "I'd have him back."

Carragher accepts the 28-year-old would take some flak for leaving. He said "Give him plenty of stick", adding that "I think he made a big mistake."

Carragher also flags the right side of defence as a problem area for Liverpool. Ronald Araujo, a centre-back by trade, has impressed there recently, and Carragher praised him. The Liverpool Echo says Araujo is primarily a central defender and not a long-term solution. Carragher pointed to the passing of Liverpool's full-backs as the problem:

"We've definitely missed his creativity."

At Real Madrid, Alexander-Arnold has slipped to third choice at right-back. Carragher put it bluntly: "At the moment, he's actually third choice right-back for Real Madrid." Uruguayan midfielder Federico Valverde has been played at right-back, and Carragher noted that Denzel Dumfries, the first-choice right-back, came on as a substitute in El Clasico. Alexander-Arnold sat on the bench as an unused substitute when Real beat Barcelona in El Clasico on Sunday. The Mirror says he is seemingly not wanted by the Spanish club.

Valverde may have opened a door. He picked up an injury in that game and played on before being replaced by Dumfries. Speaking after the match, Valverde said: "My leg was bothering me a little after a tackle I made." Jose Mourinho praised him: "He got injured, he wanted to keep going and push himself to his limits." The Mirror says a return to Anfield cannot be ruled out.

Liverpool's right-back options are thin too. The Echo says Jeremie Frimpong, currently out injured, has had a frustrating time at Anfield, with midfielders often preferred at right-back even when he is fit.

Liverpool have brought players back before. The Echo lists Ian Rush, who left for Juventus in 1987 for a British record fee. Rush spent just one year in Italy without settling there, then came back to Liverpool's home ground and later added another First Division crown and a pair of FA Cup successes.
