A24 reported more than 2,000 sold-out screenings for the Elizabeth Holmes documentary, which is still expanding nationwide.
You Can See Everything, A24's documentary about Elizabeth Holmes, the convicted Theranos founder, opened to an estimated $15 million from 855 theaters. That put it at No. 2 on the weekend chart, behind Paramount's video game adaptation Street Fighter.
The film was made in secret and had its surprise world premiere at the Telluride Film Festival. Less than two months ago, the public did not know it existed. A24 reported more than 2,000 sold-out screenings as audiences rushed to theaters to avoid spoilers, and the film is expanding nationwide in the weeks to come.
Its co-directors are Nathan Fielder, known for HBO's The Rehearsal and Comedy Central's Nathan for You, and Lance Oppenheim, who recently directed the Robert Pattinson-led A24 hit *Primetime*.
The opening works out to $17,543 per theater. Among non-music documentaries, only Michael Moore's Fahrenheit 9/11 opened bigger, with $23.9 million in 2004. You Can See Everything also had the largest debut for any film on fewer than 1,000 screens since 2006's Borat.
Analyst David A. Gross, who publishes the FranchiseRe box office newsletter, said the weekend was notable for the genre:
"This is a giant weekend for the genre."
Most of the opening crowd was young, and the reaction was strong.
Theranos dissolved in 2018 after investigators found its technology did not work, and Holmes was convicted of conspiracy to defraud investors and wire fraud. The documentary tracks Holmes across the 34 days leading up to her 2023 imprisonment. Across the film, Holmes insists she is innocent and says she never lied about the blood-testing technology developed by Theranos.
Before the film opened, an Oct. 5 post on Holmes' X account read, "I really don't think you are ready for this doc."
Her fiancé, Billy Evans, appeared on the All-in Podcast, released Oct. 14. He said the couple agreed to take part "to have people see who she is," and added that he had not yet seen the film. "I might think this is the dumbest thing I've ever done," he said.
Her prison release is scheduled for 2030.
