Universal shows first look at Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler in Miami Vice '85

The reboot is in production and due in theaters on May 19, 2028.

Universal has released a first look at Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler in Miami Vice '85, the reboot of the 1980s TV classic. Jordan plays Ricardo Tubbs and Butler plays James Sonny Crockett.

Butler, 35, is shown in a grey suit, aiming a gun. Jordan, 39, wears an all-black look with a leather trench coat and holds a gun. Universal captioned Butler's photo with a line that makes the casting plain:

"Austin Butler is Crockett. Miami Vice ’85 - now in production"

Jordan's photo carried a matching caption naming him as Tubbs, and the film is in production now.

Joseph Kosinski, who directed Top Gun: Maverick, is directing the film. The screenplay is credited to Dan Gilroy, who wrote Nightcrawler, along with Kosinski and Eric Warren Singer. Dylan Clark is producing with Kosinski. People reports that cinematographer Claudio Miranda, who worked with Kosinski on F1 and Top Gun: Maverick, is reuniting with him.

The wider ensemble also features Whitney Peak, Michael Irby, André Holland, Danny Ramirez, John Leguizamo, Walton Goggins, Camila Morrone and Alden Ehrenreich. People also lists Andrew Schulz and Edi Gathegi.

The original NBC series ran from 1984 to 1990 across five seasons. Don Johnson played Crockett and Philip Michael Thomas played Tubbs, as two Miami detectives working undercover to take down drug kingpins. Michael Mann, who both directed and executive produced the show, was broadly recognized for its sleek visual look. Mann later rebooted it as the 2006 film starring Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx, which was a commercial and critical disappointment at the time.

The new film draws on the 1984 pilot and first season rather than retelling the show's story.

Jordan starred in Ryan Coogler's Sinners, playing twin brothers in the vampire film, and is preparing to direct and star opposite Adria Arjona in The Thomas Crown Affair. Butler's most recent appearance came in Caught Stealing, where he plays a former ballplayer mixed up with New York's mob underworld, and he also held a supporting part in Eddington.

Cinemas are the sole planned release venue for Miami Vice '85, with its arrival set for May 19, 2028.
