The four-song add-on, led by single 'Patient Zero,' lands nearly a year after the original and just ahead of her record-setting night at the VMAs.
Nearly a year after she released The Life of a Showgirl on 3 October 2025, Taylor Swift has walked back out for a second act. On Friday 25 September she put out The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore, a deluxe edition that stitches four new songs onto the original 12-track album. Two days later she premiered the video for lead single "Patient Zero" at the 2026 MTV VMAs.
The four new cuts are "Patient Zero," "Cleveland!", "Pink Clouding" and "Babylon," and they sit a little uneasily against the original tracklist. Swift announced the album last August on Travis Kelce's New Heights podcast as a tight set of 12 pop songs made with Max Martin and Shellback, and she was adamant there would be no extras. "There's not a 13th, there's not other ones coming," she said. "You couldn't add one. It's just right."
That four songs now exist is the first surprise. The second is that none of them really pick up the showgirl thread. "Cleveland!" is the most direct of the bunch, a giddy love letter to her husband Travis Kelce that leans into the Cleveland connection. "Pink Clouding" turns the lens inward, with Swift taking the blame for a relationship she let slide, while "Babylon" follows an anonymous gambler rather than Swift herself. "Patient Zero," the single, looks back at a toxic ex and the unlikely alliance she offers his next girlfriend.
Swift has said the songs were written last year, in the glow of the album's success. "We just wanted to reflect and take in how grateful we were for the moment we were in," she said of her sessions with Martin and Shellback.
The "Patient Zero" video, starring Colin Farrell and Dakota Johnson and shot by Academy Award-winning cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki, premiered at the VMAs on Sunday 27 September. Swift left that night with the show's first-ever Artist Director Honors and, off the back of 11 nominations, the title of the most-awarded artist in VMA history.
Where the showgirl goes from here is the question the add-on raises more than it answers. Swift has spent recent months riding the country-leaning "I Knew It, I Knew You," her Toy Story 5 track, and dropping hints of a full return to her roots. Taylor Nation has said the full "Patient Zero" video lands on YouTube on Tuesday 29 September.
