Szoboszlai's hamstring problem is a recurrence of the one that kept him out of the previous two games.
Liverpool came from behind to beat Brentford 2-1 on Saturday, but the afternoon cost them two players. Dominik Szoboszlai was replaced after 32 minutes with a recurrence of the hamstring problem that had kept him out of the previous two games. Frimpong, who was brought on at the interval, also had to leave the field with an injury.
Head coach Andoni Iraola told reporters after the match: "But it will mean we will lose Dom and Jeremie for some time." Both players will be out for a spell, and both are due scans to find out how serious the damage is.
Iraola described a very delicate situation. Liverpool had played away at LASK in Austria in the Champions League earlier in the week, and the players got back late at night, probably without a proper recovery. He said the club had to pick between players who had started two games and were very tired, and players coming back from injury whose fitness was not certain.
Iraola explained the difference between the two cases:
"Dom felt the same injury, it’s not a new injury and was probably not healed enough, so we will need more time with him."
Frimpong's problem was new. Iraola said: "Jeremie was new. He finished the game cramping the other day." He put Frimpong on at half-time because, with Brentford down to ten men, he thought the right-back could offer more going forward than Ronald Araujo.
Liverpool trailed to Keane Lewis-Potter's first-half header. The match turned on a red card shown to Brentford defender Yehor Yarmoliuk in first-half additional time. Referee John Brooks judged that he had used a head-butting motion towards Liverpool centre-back Jeremy Jacquet. Asked about it, Iraola said: "I have to say I've seen it on the screen and I'm not sure if it was or not."
Victor Munoz equalised after the break. Alexander Isak marked his return from injury with the winner, his fifth goal of the season. Brentford were then reduced to nine men when Vitaly Janelt was shown a second bookable offence in injury time, for fouling Liverpool substitute Rio Ngumoha.
Opta's data shows Florian Wirtz, the German playmaker, set up nine goal chances, a Premier League single-game high for one player since 2021. Iraola said: "I think you need players like Flo."
Liverpool next host Villarreal in the Champions League on Tuesday, then welcome Brighton to Anfield in the Premier League. The Reds are three games into a busy spell of nine matches in 29 days across three competitions, and both injured players will be out for some time.
Both are to have scans to gauge the extent of the harm.
