Matt Reeves is still on the film, but Steven Soderbergh will shoot the final weeks of principal photography.
Oscar-winning director Steven Soderbergh is stepping in to help finish shooting The Batman Part II while writer-director Matt Reeves deals with a family matter. A studio statement says Soderbergh approached Reeves himself, as an admirer of his work, and will help complete the final weeks of principal photography, with the full support of DC Studios. The news was confirmed on Thursday.
Production was paused in early October, when Warner Bros. and DC Studios said Reeves had temporarily stepped away from the project. The film had begun shooting in London in June. According to Deadline, Reeves will stay involved remotely while Soderbergh works on the set in London.
Reeves responded on X. "Just to be clear, I am not leaving The Batman Part II," he wrote. "I am profoundly grateful to Steven for coming to my aid during this challenging time to help me finish principal photography."
DC Studios chief James Gunn also confirmed the news on Threads and said Reeves still directs the sequel. "Matt is still the director of The Batman 2 and always will be," he wrote.
In his own statement, Soderbergh described his role as preserving the film's existing visual and creative direction, and he praised Reeves's work:
"I thought Matt Reeves' work on 'The Batman' was stunning; it was intentional, specific, and rigorously coherent."
He wants the new footage to 'integrate seamlessly with what's already been shot' so Reeves can finish his film.
Cinemas are scheduled to screen The Batman Part II on February 18, 2028. Robert Pattinson returns as the Caped Crusader, alongside Scarlett Johansson, Colin Farrell, Sebastian Stan, Andy Serkis and Jeffrey Wright. The film has been delayed several times since it was announced at CinemaCon in 2022, most recently in June.
According to Deadline, Reeves is expected to take a more active role in post-production.
