Sony is readying a re-release of the summer's biggest film, restoring Rosario Dawson's cut Claire Temple scene, with no date set.

Sony and Marvel are sending the summer's biggest movie back to cinemas. A theatrical re-release of Spider-Man: Brand New Day is in the works with footage that did not make the July cut, including the Rosario Dawson scene fans have been asking about since she first mentioned it.

Dawson plays Claire Temple, the nurse who stitches up vigilantes across the Marvel shows: Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist and The Defenders. She filmed a scene for Brand New Day, but it landed on the cutting room floor. She said as much at a fan event in July. "My character is somewhere in that same universe, and I really love that," she said. "I hope I get to be Claire again." That wish now looks close to coming true.

Sony has not set a date for the re-release, or spelled out what else the new footage holds. The arithmetic behind it is plain. Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and starring Tom Holland and Zendaya, with Sadie Sink and Jon Bernthal in the cast, Brand New Day has banked roughly $2.49 billion worldwide, the third-biggest haul in history behind Avatar and Avengers: Endgame. In North America it already stands alone, having passed Star Wars: The Force Awakens on September 16 to become the highest-grossing film ever at the domestic box office, with about $950 million and still climbing.

One record remains, and it is the headline one: becoming the first film to cross $1 billion in North America alone. A re-release is the fastest route over that line. It is the same move Marvel just ran with Avengers: Endgame: Encore, which returned to theatres last weekend and added about $86 million worldwide as a warm-up for Avengers: Doomsday, out December 18.

It is a franchise we have followed closely, from how each screen Spider-Man stands apart to where the animated Spider-verse is heading. For now there is no word on when Brand New Day returns, or what else Sony has tucked away in the new footage.
