Andrew Garfield still thinks Spider-Man can be gay: 'Anyone can be in that suit'

The former Amazing Spider-Man star revisited the idea in a new Entertainment Weekly interview, more than a decade after he first floated it.

Andrew Garfield hasn't let go of the idea. More than ten years after he first suggested Spider-Man didn't have to be straight, the actor told Entertainment Weekly he still believes the mask can belong to anyone.

"I just still believe that anyone can be in that suit," Garfield said. "You don't see skin colour, you don't see gender, you don't see sexuality. Anyone can project themselves into that suit."

It's a callback to the press run for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 in 2014, when Garfield raised eyebrows by suggesting Peter Parker could be gay and that Mary Jane could be played by a man. A decade on, he's clearly comfortable standing by it.

Garfield played Peter Parker in The Amazing Spider-Man (2012) and its 2014 sequel before the role passed to Tom Holland in the MCU. He returned briefly in 2021's Spider-Man: No Way Home, sharing the screen with Holland and Tobey Maguire.

Garfield made the remarks in a new Entertainment Weekly interview; neither Sony nor Marvel has commented.
