Renner says he is not in Avengers: Doomsday, which opens on 18 December 2026, and blames the team for not calling him.
Jeremy Renner, who has played Hawkeye in several Marvel films, has ruled himself out of Avengers: Doomsday. Asked whether he was returning, he replied: "No, no, no, no. Not in that one."
Renner also joked at the team's expense. "Doomsday, I'm not in," he said. "So, the Avengers will probably lose, just so you know." The punchline was about who had been left out:
"They didn't call me, so it's their fault they're gonna lose."
IGN reports that the remarks appear to come from a Q&A segment held last month. A highlight was captured and shared on X by user @drdoomarchive.
Renner first appeared as the character in Thor in 2011. He went on to lead roles in The Avengers, Avengers: Age of Ultron and Captain America: Civil War, and headlined the Disney+ series Hawkeye in 2021, alongside Hailee Steinfeld as Kate Bishop. IGN also notes that he sat out Avengers: Infinity War in 2018, the film in which the heroes lost their first fight against Thanos.
Renner did show up for Avengers: Endgame, which Marvel has brought back in an Encore re-release ahead of Doomsday. He said he was excited about the return of the film, and that he would take his 13-year-old daughter, Ava. "I'm going to take my daughter to see it."
His future in the role is unclear. In 2025 he told Empire that he was open to coming back: "I'm always happy to be in that world, man. I love all those guys, I love the character." Talk of a second season of Hawkeye seems to be on the back burner for now.
IGN says Renner could return in Avengers: Secret Wars in 2027, though his future as the character "largely remains unclear". Avengers: Doomsday opens in cinemas worldwide on 18 December 2026.
