The DC Studios co-chief says the story came from Mike Flanagan, James Watkins and Hossein Amini. Clayface opens October 23.

James Gunn has answered a Threads user who asked, "Who the f-k asked for a Clayface movie?" The user's original comment has since been deleted. Gunn's reply opened with a list of films: "Who tf asked for Back to the Future? Casablanca? There's Something About Mary? Pan's Labyrinth? Fury Road? Weapons? The Matrix?"

He then argued that Hollywood "isn't a place where the only way to make a movie is the public voting on what IP they want to see that they've seen countless times before."

In a second post, Gunn credited Mike Flanagan, then James Watkins and Hossein Amini, with taking a "relatively little-known fictional character" and crafting "what I believe is a very special story around that character." He said he would "take that inspiration a thousand times over" a "listless screenplay" by a writer "trying to make a buck" on a popular character they had no passion for.

The film is directed by James Watkins. Tom Rhys Harries plays Matt Hagen. Flanagan wrote the story and co-wrote the screenplay with Hossein Amini. The official description reads: "Matt Hagen's meteoric rise from Gotham street kid to Hollywood leading man is tragically cut short when a local crime boss's actions leave him horribly disfigured."

In a new behind-the-scenes featurette, Gunn said, "We are making a true horror film." Producer Matt Reeves put it another way: "It's a horror-thriller, but it's also a revenge story."

Clayface is due in theaters on October 23. No first reactions or reviews are out yet.
