On June 10 2022 when A COLORS SHOW released the KU LO SA performance by Oxlade, no one would have guessed the song’s projection. A year and four months later, the song has opened doors for Ox’ and Afrobeats in various regions around the earth. The story of KU LO SA, however, is even more captivating.
Oxlade speaks on the bewildering and depressing state he was in during the recording of KU LO SA‘s performance video. To cast our mind back, the singer had been involved in a sex scandal four months before the release of the video. He admitted on Tea With Tay podcast how that event took a toll on him.
Speaking on the creation process of KU LO SA, Oxlade says: “I performed ‘KU LO SA’ at the COLORS SHOW two days after my scandal.” He even added, “The song was never meant to drop.” “It was a demo, it was not (per se) a song,” Oxlade adds context.
As for the state of his mental health during the period of KU LO SA performance, “[I had] accepted defeat,” he admits. “Regressed; rejected; outcast” are adjectives Oxlade used to describe his emotional state. Two days after the performance, Oxlade checked into rehab because of his emotional imbalance state.
KU LO SA now sits as the most viewed A COLORS SHOW video on YouTube. The studio version is Platinum in France, Switzerland, and Canada. It was also included in MediaNaija’s Top 10 Best Songs of 2022. American popstar, Camilla Cabello appears in the remix as the guest star.
Although the situation that surrounded the performance was unpleasant, KU LO SA turned out to be a blessing in disguise for Oxlade.
