The eight-episode series picks up after the 2018 film, with production set to begin in 2027.
HBO has ordered a one-hour original drama series called Crazy Rich Asians, and the film's leads are coming back. Constance Wu, Henry Golding and Ronny Chieng will be series regulars, with Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh recurring. HBO announced the order on Thursday, October 8.
The show is based on Kevin Kwan's book series and will "pick up after the events of the blockbuster film" that came out in 2018, according to HBO. Wu and Golding reprise their roles as Rachel Chu and Nick Young. Ronny Chieng returns as Nick's cousin Eddie Cheng, and Yeoh plays Eleanor, the Young family matriarch.
Adele Lim, who co-wrote the 2018 film, will be showrunner and executive producer. In a statement shared by HBO, she said: "It's a 'Crazy Rich' family reunion! This series is the sequel we've been waiting for, but instead of just one movie, we get eight episodes to delve into the characters and worlds of Kevin Kwan's brilliant books." She added that "Our writers room is humming and we can't wait to share what we've come up with."
Jon M. Chu, who directed the film, returns as an executive producer. He said the cast has since become "movie stars, superheroes, arena-filling performers and even an Oscar winner," and that bringing everyone back together "feels like coming home."
Kwan said fans "have been patiently waiting for this, and it will be worth the wait!" Producers Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson, who also executive produce, said the series "picks up where the movie left off."
A feature sequel had been reported for years but had not moved forward. The 2018 film grossed over $239 million worldwide against a reported budget of $30 million. Deadline reports the project has been in development at HBO for about two years, after starting at HBO Max and moving to HBO proper.
A video HBO Max shared that day said: "New series in production 2027."
