The Super Eagles striker has been scoring regularly for the Turkish second-tier club since joining in July.

Bursaspor head coach Mustafa Er says the Turkish club faced stiff competition for Kelechi Iheanacho, including from Scottish champions Celtic, before the Super Eagles striker signed in the summer. The 30-year-old arrived as a free agent in July 2026, after talks with Celtic broke down.

Iheanacho had joined Celtic in September 2025 and scored nine goals in 24 appearances in all competitions for the club. He helped them secure a domestic title in the 2025/26 campaign, but the former Manchester City and Leicester City forward opted for a fresh challenge in Turkey.

The move has paid off quickly. Iheanacho has become a key part of Bursaspor's promotion push in Turkey's second tier, and he has been on a blistering run of goalscoring form. Er was clear about what the club wanted from the deal:

"We transferred Iheanacho so that he would score goals."

He added that the club had worked very hard for the transfer and needed to thank its management. Er said there was "a lot of demand for him", and that the club's size was also a key factor in choosing Bursaspor. The club, he said, is getting the contribution it wants.

Er also pointed to "tremendous progress in team spirit" in the squad, and said: "Productivity is also increasing."

Looking ahead to the next match, Er said: "Iheanacho continues to score. I hope he scores this week too. We have a positive team."

Back with the Super Eagles, Iheanacho opened the scoring in the 10th minute of Nigeria's 3-3 draw against Russia on 6 October.
