The Nigerian star, who previously appeared on GTA V's iFruit Radio, now hosts a station of his own ahead of the November 19 release.
Nigerian star Burna Boy is getting a radio station of his own in Grand Theft Auto VI. Rockstar Games unveiled six in-game stations on Thursday, October 8, and Burna Boy hosts AfroBank FM with producer Palms Trax. In the game they go by Burna and Palmsy.
The station spans African music, amapiano and 3-step, from classics and deep cuts to contemporary tracks. Burna Boy's link to the series started earlier. He previously appeared on GTA V's iFruit Radio with Killin Dem, and he contributed Gettin' Money to the GTA Online Cayo Perico update.
"I've been playing GTA since way before my music ever made it into the game, so this one is personal," Burna Boy told Hypebeast. He said AfroBank FM "gives us a space to bring our sound, our energy and our culture into a world I've been part of as a player for years."
GTA has always understood that the music is part of the world, not just something playing in the background.
Palms Trax, who also spoke to Hypebeast, said "I can't think of anything presented on this scale, musically speaking, with such a tremendous amount of perseverance and care behind it." He said some of the songs had spent decades in obscurity, and that seeing them given pride of place for one of the most anticipated audiences in the world was moving.
Previewed selections include Asake's Joha, Gye Wani by Pat Thomas and Ebo Taylor, and Shay'sana from DJ Lag and Robot Boii, featuring Kamo Mphela.
Rockstar is also bringing in on-demand podcasts, marking the first time the series has offered them. Jason and Lucia can keep listening to music and podcasts outside vehicles through their in-game smartphones.
The other stations are Cocoteo FM, hosted by Bad Bunny and RaiNao; Back Country Radio, with Morgan Wallen and Lana Del Rey; Flash FM, with Robyn and Alex Consani; Dirty South Classics, with Trick Daddy and Trina; and The Chamber 106.6, with Slayer's Kerry King and Tom Araya. More stations are still to come, with Rockstar promising classic rock, blues, electronic and talk radio. Grand Theft Auto VI lands on November 19 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
