The first time ‘Sability’ appeared on Ayra Starr’s page was on November 16, 2022, as a caption for a photo in which she rocked a fluffy pink headgear while showing off her silver-studded dentition.
A few hours before the release of her latest single, Ayra Starr defines “Sability”, a compound word merging “sabi” (Pidgin English for “to know” or “having knowledge”) and “ability” as “the ability to sabi ! (sic).”
Ayra Starr’s newest music offering is a production masterpiece by London and Mbryo in which they sample African music legend Awilo Logomba’s vocal chants and his pioneered genre Soukous, fusing it with log drums from South Africa’s Amapiano.
Per the meaning, Sability has Ayra Starr singing about her musical prowess, and her stainless record of always delivering no matter the genre she hops on. “Deliver like I get belle oh”, she boasts.
“Sabi girl” is Ayra Starr’s way of telling her audience she is self-conscious and very confident about her music. She used that phrase in ‘Rush’, and likely might patent it soon (if she has not already) because it irrefutably describes her growing brand.
“Oni reason why dem dey call me oloyin / While you beefing, I’m still leading / Kill anything I no fit miss / You no go fit in my shoes / High fashion, Jimmy Choo”, Ayra Starr wittingly plays on her government name (Oyinkansola) and luxury brand (Jimmy Choo) as she vaunts her musical skill.
The song comes with the catchy anthemic chorus “Sabi oh, oh-oh (Come on, come on) / Sabi oh, oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh” wherein Starr lauds her Sability.
