After an easy 3-1 win over Sudan on Saturday evening, the Super Eagles became the third team to advance to the knockout stages of the African Cup of Nations. The team led by Austin Eguavoen continued their winning streak after their performance against Egypt, scoring in the third minute when Samuel Chukwueze tapped home from close range.
Right before halftime, Taiwo Awoniyi made it 2-0, and Moses Simon added a third in the first minute of the second half, tucking the ball in from a tight angle on the left. After VAR intervened following a foul by Ola Aina, Walieldin Khedr Safour Daiyeen scored Sudan’s only goal and first of the tournament – and his first at international level – from the penalty spot with 20 minutes left. Following their win against Egypt on Tuesday, Nigeria now has six points from two games, while Sudan can boast of just one point so far.
The Super Eagles will face a third-placed side in the last 16 if they can win Group D.
