After weeks of smashing multiple box office records. Funke Akindele’s “A Tribe Called Judah” has crossed the N1 billion mark at the Nigerian Box Office.
The film is the first Nollywood production to earn N1 billion at the domestic box office. A feat it achieved in three weeks! This achievement is all the more astounding given that Marvel Studios’ Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is the only other film to gross a billion at the Nigerian box office . And it took that film 16 weeks to make a billion Naira.
Kene Okwuosa, the group CEO of FilmHouse Group, broke the news about A Tribe Called Judah’s achievement in a statement on Instagram. He praised the growth of the Nigerian cinema landscape. Stating, “Akindele’s film has not only captivated audiences. But has also proven the resilience of Nigerian cinema in the face of global streaming giants like Netflix and Prime Video.”
A Tribe Called Judah has broken several records at the box office. It earned N122 million in its opening weekend. Thus setting the record for the highest opening weekend for a Nollywood production. The film also earned N400 million within its first 12 days, thereby setting a new industry standard.
Also, fans and colleagues have dubbed Akindele the “box office queen” over the years. She has a track record of breaking box office records. A Tribe Called Judah is her third commercially successful film at the box office. Her previous films, ‘Battle on Buka Street’ and ‘Omo Ghetto: The Saga,’ earned N668.4 million and N636.1 million at the box office, respectively.
Furthermore, these films have the second and third greatest box office receipts in Nigeria. With a resume like that, it’s easy to see why Funke Akindele is considered the undisputed queen of the Nigerian box office. “
A Tribe Called Judah” is a comedic drama. It tells the story of a single mother and her five sons, who, faced with financial hardship, hatch a plan to rob a mall.
