The Game of Thrones franchise just got a little bit larger as The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that HBO is developing a new prequel series set in the fictional fantasy universe.
According to a new THR piece, HBO is working on a Game of Thrones prequel based on Aegon’s Conquest of Westeros. Per the article, the studio is working with acclaimed writer Mattson Tomlin (The Batman) on the project. Tomlin also confirmed the news on X (formerly Twitter) by responding with a sword emoji beneath the article post.
HBO has made various attempts to expand the Game of Thrones franchise since the original series ended in 2019. These include the creation of multiple prospective prequel and sequel series. However, several are no longer in active development. So yet, the studio has only premiered one prequel series, House of the Dragon. However, HBO intends to begin production on a second prequel series, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight, this year. It is an adaptation of George R. R. Martin’s Dunk and Egg novellas.
Further, Aegon’s Conquest will be a direct prequel to House of the Dragon. The series will tell the story of Aegon I Targaryen’s brutal conquest of Westeros. The story follows Aegon Targaryen, his sister wives, Rhaenys and Visenya, and their dragons as they set out to conquer the continent of Westeros. They eventually succeeded in unifying six of the Seven Kingdoms under Targaryen rule.
